Metalworking productivity improves when material, information, and capacity move at the same pace. Isolated improvements have little effect if the next process is still waiting.

Make flow visible

Start by showing queued, in-process, and completed work at every center. That view exposes queues, priority changes, and constraints.

  • Measure waiting time as well as process time.
  • Identify the daily bottleneck.
  • Limit work released to the shop.

Balance capacity

Scheduling must account for people, machines, tooling, and available material. Fully loading one station usually extends the total lead time.

  • Schedule with finite capacity.
  • Group jobs by setup family.
  • Protect the constraint with ready material.

Close the improvement loop

Metrics matter only when they lead to frequent decisions. A short shop meeting can turn yesterday's data into action for the current shift.

  • Review safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
  • Assign an owner and due date to every action.
  • Verify the effect before standardizing it.
