Waste begins long before a machine starts. An incomplete specification, an outdated cut list, or an unlabeled offcut can turn usable stock into scrap.

Plan cuts together

Combining compatible demand lets teams use plates and bars across work orders. Nesting must account for actual machine constraints and delivery priorities.

  • Consolidate cut lists before releasing material.
  • Set trim and kerf allowances.
  • Compare planned yield with actual yield.

Manage offcuts

A remainder has value only when it can be located and used with confidence. Its record needs net dimensions, grade, location, and condition.

  • Label offcuts immediately after cutting.
  • Set minimum sizes worth retaining.
  • Include them in availability searches.

Prevent execution mistakes

Rework and incorrect cuts consume more than material: they displace capacity and delay the job. Standardizing release controls both risks.

  • Check the drawing revision at point of use.
  • Require approval for first-off cuts.
  • Record the cause of every unusual loss.
