Inventory automation works when it removes duplicate entry and leaves a dependable trail for every movement. The goal is not to add scanners; it is to make receiving, picking, and consumption visible when decisions are made.
Start with material movements
Before selecting technology, map the material journey and name the person who confirms each handoff. Unowned handoffs are where ghost inventory begins.
- Map receiving, transfer, cutting, and shipping.
- Define exceptions for returns and remnants.
- Measure the delay between a movement and its record.
Select the right identification method
Barcodes, QR codes, and RFID solve different problems. The choice depends on the environment, read distance, and the cost of identifying the unit.
- Use labels that withstand dust and abrasion.
- Test reads on metallic surfaces.
- Keep a manual fallback for outages.
Connect it to planning
Capture becomes valuable when it updates reservations, consumption, and purchasing requirements. Integration should provide useful alerts rather than simply more records.
- Issue consumption to the correct work order.
- Alert teams when a reservation changes state.
- Validate material master data before automating.
